On a mission to raise awareness about one of the most critical health issues affecting our society, the Inner Wheel Club of Guwahati East partnered with the North East Cancer Hospital and Research Institute (NECHRI) to organize a Cancer Awareness and Health Camp at L.P. School in Nazirakhat, Guwahati, Assam, dated 15th February, 2025. This impactful event aimed to educate school children and community members about cancer, its preventive measures, and the importance of early detection.
Creating Awareness in the Community
Cancer is a growing concern across the globe, and Northeast India is no exception. It is one of the most prevalent diseases in the region, making it all the more essential to spread awareness about it. The camp at L.P. School was a significant step toward addressing this need by providing knowledge on cancer prevention, recognizing early symptoms, and adopting a healthy lifestyle.
The event was specially designed to cater to the local community, including students, parents, and people from surrounding areas. It was a reminder that cancer education is not just limited to adults, but needs to start early in the school years. By educating children, we help them grow up with the knowledge they need to make healthy choices and recognize any warning signs in the future.
A Day of Knowledge and Insight
The event began with an insightful session by Dr. Dhiren Kumar Nath, Dy Superintendent, Head & Neck Oncology, NECHRI. His talk focused on the importance of cancer awareness and the vital role of preventive measures in reducing the risk of developing cancer. Dr. Nath emphasized the need for regular check-ups, adopting a balanced lifestyle, and staying informed about the types of cancers prevalent in the region, particularly those affecting the head and neck.
Following Dr. Nath’s enlightening talk, Dr.Jumi Borgohain, Director and Chief Radiation Oncology at NECHRI, delivered a comprehensive presentation on cancer. Dr.Borgohain explained the various types of cancer, the advancements in radiation oncology, and the importance of early diagnosis. Her session was filled with essential information on treatment options, as well as the emotional and physical aspects of cancer care, empowering the audience with the knowledge to act if they or their loved ones ever face such a diagnosis.
A Collaborative Effort
The camp was made possible by the efforts of Smt. JayabatiMedhiRahang, the Head Mistress of L.P. School, and Dr.Maitrayee Dutta Swarglary, Secretary of Inner Wheel Club, Guwahati East. Together, with the support of nurses and staff members from both organizations, they ensured the smooth organization of the camp. Their commitment to community health and education was evident as they worked together to create an environment where people could freely learn and ask questions about this often-dreaded disease.
Conclusion
The Cancer Awareness & Health Camp organized by the Inner Wheel Club of Guwahati East and the North East Cancer Hospital & Research Institute is just one example of the tireless efforts being made to educate the public and reduce the impact of cancer in the region. Through continued awareness campaigns and collaborative initiatives, we can work towards a healthier, cancer-free future.
